In the beautiful Iroon Politechniou Square with its palm trees and the fountain is a two-storey neoclassical building built in 1845 under the rule of Nouris Pasha used to house state services. It was the temporary residence of Prince George, High Commissioner of Crete from 1898-1906. Today it houses the services of the Regional Unit of Rethymno. Around the square, there are cafes and taverns to enjoy your coffee or food.

On the ring road on the west side of the castle of Fortezza, perched on the rocks, is the cavernous church of Agios Spyridon with its carved wooden temple. The church dates back to the end of the 16th century and is one of the oldest surviving churches in the town of Rethymno.

The castle of Fortezza is built on the hill of Paleokastro -north of the present town-where the acropolis of the ancient city of Rithymna was. It was built during the period of Venetian rule and was founded on 13 September 1573. The castle is entered from the eastern gate, through an arcade. You can tour inside, visit the mosque of Ibrahim Chan, the open-air theater "Erofili" and enjoy the view of the sea, the Venetian Harbor, and the city.

It was one of the most important streets during Venetian rule, as well as during Ottoman rule, which was called Uzun socak. It crosses the city from north to south and because of its small width and long length, it was called "Makri Steno" (long alley), a name that prevails until today. There are several two or three-storey houses of traditional design, and many classic architectural elements (doorways, iconostasis, and fountain) from the Venetian and Turkish periods have been preserved.

The church of the Lady of Angels or "Mikri Panagia"- in contrast to the "Megali Panagia", the Cathedral of Rethymno - was built in the last years of the Venetian occupation and was dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene of the Dominican order. During the Turkish occupation, it was converted into a mosque with a minaret.

After a long walk in the Οld Τown continue out the gates to pause and relax underneath the pines, citrus, and palm trees in the Municipal Garden, located in the center of the city.
