It is a bustling meeting point where you can feel the urban rhythm of Rethymno, since it is placed near the coastal road, with all the bars, restaurants, and cafes, and the east entrance to the Old Town. It is named after the statue of the Square, which is dedicated to the “Unknown Soldier” and was situated there in 1930. From the square, Arkadiou Str, or Sabbionara starts, which was during the Venetian occupation and remains today one of the most important streets of the city. On it, there are splendid public and private buildings. The blocks between Arcadiou Str and the sea were built during the Ottoman period. Later in 1900, it was renamed Tsar Str and today it is one of the most commercial streets in the city.

The mosque was named after the Turkish governor of Rethymno in 1646. In its place, during the Venetian period, there was a monastery dedicated to Agia Barbara. West of the main building is the ruined minaret of the mosque. Built into the roofed entrance of the courtyard of the mosque was the fountain. It served the needs not only of the worshippers who had to wash before entering the mosque but also the water supply needs of the area. In the courtyard, there is even a 'turbe' (tomb), in which the founder of the mosque may have been buried, and many Ottoman votive tombstones.

This is a building complex located at 48-50 Arkadiou Str. It dates back to the period of Venetian rule and was either used as a private residence of a Venetian official or was in public use. Its doorframe is one of the richest in architectural decoration and largest in size in the city of Rethymno. It is decorated with lions (symbol of Venice) and winged heroes.

The impressive, privately owned building at 154 Arkadiou Str was built during the Venetian occupation but also has Ottoman elements. It is a two-storey building with a wooden balcony and remarkable decoration. The magnificent doorframe has a double inscription (Turkish and Greek) dated 1844, which reads: "Glory be to God (Allah) and save the owner".

This house at 12, Tsouderon Str has one of the most impressive Venetian doorframes in the Old Town with rich floral decoration.

This is the church of the monastery of the Franciscan order of monks. The impressive doorframe of the entrance is striking in its decoration. During the years of the Turkish occupation, the church was converted into an Imaret, a workhouse. Until 1996 it was used as a place for cultural events. It was recently restored and now houses the Archaeological Museum.

You enter the square from a Venetian doorway. The Turks narrowed it by building a smaller interior decorated with an impressive vine, lion reliefs, and the symbols of the Ottoman Empire. The 7.5 acre square in the heart of the Old Town of Rethymno is surrounded by remarkable monuments and buildings with cultural uses, such as the "Turkish" school, the House of Culture and Neratze Mosque. It is named after the Asia Minor refugees thus a monument representing the Asia Minor Catastrophe has been placed in the square.

This building was a catholic monastery and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Augustinians "Santa Maria". It was converted into a mosque in 1657. In 1890 a large minaret with two balconies were added, designed by the engineer Georgios Daskalakis and is the tallest in Rethymno. The doorway of the building, which is on Vernardou Str, is one of the most impressive of Rethymno. Today, the Neratze Mosque hosts the city's Conservatory.

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is housed in a Venetian mansion. On the ground floor, there are temporary exhibitions and educational programs. The rooms on the first floor are dedicated to the folklore section, weaving through the passage of time, embroidery, basketry, and ceramics, as well as the traditional tools of cultivation and harvesting of cereal crops and the traditional professions of the carpenter, the saddler, the shoemaker. In the beautiful courtyard, the orchard with the water chestnut trees, the well, and the cistern with the stone tub are still preserved today.

This impressive thurible belonged to a house of the Venetian Clodio family and is located at 30, Vernardou Str. It has elements of gothic architecture and rich decoration. The coat of arms of the Clodio family is preserved, as well as the Latin inscription: "VIRTUTE FULCIDA DOMUS. MDCIX KAL. JUNII." (With virtue the house shines, first days of June 1609.) Today, on the ground floor of the building, there is a workshop for the manufacture of “filo kataifi”, used for traditional sweets, the only one in the city of Rethymno.

The church of the Lady of Angels or "Mikri Panagia"- in contrast to the "Megali Panagia", the Cathedral of Rethymno - was built in the last years of the Venetian occupation and was dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene of the Dominican order. During the Turkish occupation, it was converted into a mosque with a minaret.

In the alleys of the Old Town, many houses are preserved, excellent examples of Ottoman architecture. Their typical feature is the "sahnisi", a wooden balcony on the floor which was the reception room. These wooden pavilions, often additions to Venetian buildings, extend over the street. Some are of simple construction and others are artfully worked, with carved "furrows" and framed windows.

The fountain located at the junction of P. Koroneou and Smyrna streets was probably built for the needs of the adjacent mosque of Yahya Ibrahim. It was in operation until the 50s. The marble inscription of the fountain reads: "THIS FOUNTAIN WAS MADE TO DRINK WATER THE PEOPLE AND WHOEVER GOES AND DRINKS WATER AND QUENCH HIS THIRST AND PRAY. FOR THE SOUL OF THE ONE WHO MADE IT." The church of Agia Sophia about 1670 was converted into a mosque by Yahya Ibrahim. An 8m high wooden minaret was added, which was destroyed at the end of the 19th century.  Today the building is used as a venue for cultural events.                                                                          

In the beautiful Iroon Politechniou Square with the palm trees and the fountain, there is a two-storey neoclassical building built in 1845 under Nouris Pasha, used to house state services. It was the temporary residence of Prince George, High Commissioner of Crete in 1898-1906. Today it houses the services of the Regional Unit of Rethymno. There are small cafes and “rakadika”, which are also meeting points for plenty of people in the summertime, while at its borders is the western entrance of the historic center.
