Rethymno, unique experience accessible to all

The aim is to improve the quality of life offered to everyone, resident or visitor, and, at the same time, to prevent discriminations or exclusion. People with special needs and their families will have memorable holidays in our city. There is direct access to almost all public places and many private ones, such as hotels and restaurants that are characterized by the absence of physical barriers.

The construction or renovation of outdoor public spaces and buildings respond to the specific needs of persons with reduced mobility (improvements of side-walks, slopes, presence of ramps, type of pavement, handrails, pedestrian crossings). The roads are also wide enough, which makes getting around easier, and there are plenty of accessible accommodation options. Specifically, the renovation of Agnostou Stratioti Sqr, Mikrasiaton Sqr and the municipal garden with the new playground, gives the opportunity to adults and children with special needs to visit and enjoy all the services and activities that these historical and leisure places have to offer. Rethymno has the perfect combination of cultural heritage and beautiful beaches, and much of it is accessible.

Many parts of Rethymno’s famous 10 Blue Flag-awarded sandy beach are equipped for wheelchair users and feature lifeguards and accessible bathrooms. Within the city, many of the main sites, including the Rimondi Fountain, the Quora Gate, the Aghios Frangiskos Church, the Piazza, and of course, the entire seafront promenade and Venetian Harbor with its famous lighthouse, are accessible as well. In 2015, the Municipality of Rethymno coordinated with the National Confederation of Disabled People to implement a program to improve the conditions for people with disabilities. The project, called “Rethymno For All”, included physical improvements of infrastructure and general accessibility. A digital travel guide was created and it can be a good starting point when you’re looking for information about accessible accommodation, beaches, and public services.
