Erasmus+ Polish students

Over a month period, students from Poland had a chance to work as part of a team on tourism projects.

During the Erasmus+ practice, students go on a chronological task to cover different aspects of tourism.  

During the project, the Polish students took a  guided tour, to learn about local history.  

The students were happy because "We got to cooperate with the municipality of Rethymno, Department of Tourism. It was a great experience that will definitely have an impact on our future. We had the opportunity to get to know the culture and history of the town. Thanks to our cooperation we visited places that we probably wouldn't, because we didn't know about most of them, for example, the lyra and baklava workshops or the museum of contemporary art.  Thanks to this practice we learned a lot of important skills that will be useful in our futures. We got an opportunity to bond with local people and see how they live, but also with tourists since we're part of the tourism industry. We got to try local food and have a taste of Greek life, which is different than our lives in Poland. This month gave us a lot of changes in a lot of aspects of everyday life for example climate and the weather, different language, and currency, and even simple conversations were unusual for us because people here are much more outgoing and extroverted. We had a very good time here and we don't want to leave the city because Rethymno feels like our second home. We're really thankful for this whole month of working together with the Municipality of Rethymno, and the Department of Tourism, it was an unforgettable and marvelous adventure. We hope to see you once again". 

Through their eyes, their experience in Rethymno is as follows:  

Crete is located in the south of Greece, it is the biggest island in the country and it's surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.  Rethymno is an hour away from the airport in Heraklion and 45 minutes from the airport in Chania - the two biggest cities on the island, Rethymno is third.                                                                                                                   

 Guided tour     When you are sightseeing Rethymno it's worth visiting the old Venice Port and lighthouse because they are one of the most recognized elements of the city. The view is breathtaking and the pictures from this place are amazing. 

The city is full of beautiful places but this area is one of the most frequently visited, which is not weird because if you want a full experience you need to see this by yourself. 

 In the old Venetian port, only small boats can be moored, from time to time you can as well see a cruise pirate ship. One of the elements of the port is an Egyptian lighthouse that was built during the short-term occupation of Crete by them. 

The lighthouse is 9 meters long and its construction has oriental elements and kinda looks like a minaret.  Light from the lighthouse reaches up to 49 meters, sadly it does not do its full job nowadays even though it's happily visited place by tourists and photographers from the whole world.  If you want to try some traditional sweets, you can visit bakeries in the old town. Most of them are family businesses and the foods they make are delicious.   The alleys in the old town are magical and you can feel like in a movie, they are perfect for evening walks.  When you walk down the old town, there are a lot of shops with souvenirs, cafés, and restaurants with traditional food, that you need to try at least once.

Next to the Titou Petychaki square, there is a Rimondi fountain. Which was the main source of the water in town.   The fountain along with Loggia and the clock tower set out the borders of the Venetian square. 

These days the water is still coming out from the famous three lions' heads.

The experience that we are getting here is definitely unforgettable and our story here just begins and we are up to explore even more of this beautiful city and its infrastructure. 

 Visiting the University of Crete - Library  

 We had an opportunity to visit the University of Crete, which opened in 1973. The library was built similar to the old greek amphitheater, which nowadays is a quite big problem with spreading sound in the building. 6000 students attend this school and the university is involved in the European programs e. g. ERASMUS, LINQUA and TEMPUS.

On the premises of the university, we can find the museum of natural history, the university hospital, and the “Skinakas” observatory.

University gives you the opportunity to study in five departments such as philosophy, education, economic and political sciences, science, and engineering. University includes one of the biggest libraries in Europe in which you can find short loan collections that include material of high demand - borrowing material is usually restricted to a few hours only. There are also limited access collections - that contain old books, engravings, and other printed or nonprinted materials of particular historical or scholarly value. 

The library has three levels and the other parts of it are currently being added. There is a  laboratory in which they take care of the condition of the books and any damage is repaired there. You can use one of the two systems to find your book: online and stationery. The library has many computers and study areas. It is a perfect place for bookworms as there are books in many languages.

Visiting Fortress

Recently we had the opportunity to visit the fortress in Rethymno which is built in the XVI century by Venetians. The fortress was built on the hill of Paleokastro. You can enter the fortress through the Eastern gate complex, which is the main gate, as it is near the town without being on the front line. The first thing you see is Artillery Warehouse, in which people used to collect weapons, now there is an exhibition there. The next point on our excursion was Hellenistic buildings and St. Lucas bastion - a square where the cannons that protected the fortress from the south, were placed - now serves as an ideal vantage point. On our way further, there’s Counselor’s Residence, it was the residence of one of the two city councilors, he kept order in the fortress, which now serves as a laboratory for the restoration of monuments. The most amazing thing we saw was the warehouse complex of the northern auxiliary gate, which was the main complex of food. In the area, there’s a three gunpowder warehouses. In the center, there’s a Sultan Ibrahim Khan Mosque - the first mosque in the town. Nowadays it is used as an exhibition and music events venue. Right next to the mosque is the Episcopate Mansion and St. Catherine’s Church - a cistern converted into a temple in the 19th century. There is also a Twin building built at the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century, nowadays it is used as an exhibition venue. At the end of the tour you can see the Pentagonal fortress previously used as better protection of the central gate of the fortress and for a long time, it houses the prisons of Rethymno. This is a perfect place for nice views and valuable memories. You can also buy souvenirs and eat a tasty meal. This place is definitely worth seeing.

Churches

Religion is an important part of many people's life. That's why we visited churches around Rethymno to get to know its religious values.

We visited five main churches, the first one was the Cathedral of the Great Holy Virgin.

The original building was a three-aisled basilica with the middle aisle dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and the other two to the Three Hierarchs and the Holy Apostles. This church was founded in 1844 and was completed in 1856.

The next church was much smaller and pretty hard to find but it means that it was meant for locals and people who are strongly connected to their faith.

Another church we visited was the neoclassical church of Agios Antonios in the old town of Rethymnon which belongs to the Catholic doctrine. It was built in 1890, as the inscription states at the entrance, and was built to meet the needs of the city's Catholic Christians. The cathedral dedicated to Saint Francis served as a workhouse, sadly it was closed but it still left an impression on us.

Our next stop was the Church of Our Lady of the Angels which was built in the last year of Venetian rule and was dedicated to Mary Magdalene.

Last but not least, was the church that left the biggest impression on us - Saint Spyridon Holy Chapel, it is located next to the biggest attraction of the city - The Fortezza. To get to the church people need to walk up the stairs but the path is worth it. This is a small Orthodox Chapel that is built into a rock.

We also visited Mosque Neratzes. It is also known as Gazi Hussein Mosque and is found close to Petichaki square. Initially, it was a Venetian church dedicated to Santa Maria, and later on, it became an Augustinian Monastery. However, when the Turks dominated the town in 1657, their leader, Gazi Hussein Pasha, turned it into a mosque.

People in the city have diverse religions and you can find places of many denominations such as orthodox, Muslim, Christian and many others, it's important that every person in the city can have an opportunity and a place to pray.

Museum of contemporary art of Crete - Recently we had the opportunity to visit the Museum of contemporary art of Crete, which houses the works of 33 artists from Greece, but also from around the world, based on the ideas and beliefs of Maria Marangou.  The cannons express "the present of our past, without nostalgia", most of them are made of clay, earth, materials, marble, loom, etc.

 Despite the differences in performance, materials, and techniques, and the different perspectives of the artists, the works raised similar problems in the contemporary world.  The way the artists expressed their views through art touched us a lot.  The performance of the works is rather unusual and original, which can be seen in the works of the youngest artist in the museum, who combined marble and skateboard wheels.  The artist combined his passion with things that have been in the world for years.  The works of the artists also reflect their own lives, which can be seen in the work of Blind Adam, a blind artist whose painting we had the opportunity to see.  It made a great impression on us.  The influence of the artists' lives on their works was also noticed in an installation by one of the artists, who sewed elements of an important carpet into her dresses.  The whole trip was very important to us and we liked it very much.

 Museum of traditional musical instrument -  Today we had the opportunity to visit Stagaki's traditional musical instrument workshop. A business that has been created for three generations. It has been running since 1945r. At the entrance is a museum where an exhibition devoted to production is displayed. On the exhibition are Cretan lyres and other instruments. In the next room, we saw the work of the creators in the production of musical instruments. They familiarized us with the stages of production and the tools used for this. Customers have the opportunity to play instruments. In the next part of the building, there was an exhibition of instruments from every part of Greece, such as mandolin and handmade bouzouki. At the end of the tour, we had the opportunity to listen to professional musicians playing beautifully for us.

Visiting Rethymno's Farmer's market - open market

The open market in Rethymno is located next to Municipal Garden it is a convenient spot to experience the everyday life of local people.

Marketers offer regional products which they manufacture themselves such as olives, honey, herbs, cheese, etc. 

You can also find there a lot of clothes. It's a little chaotic place but when you are walking down the alleys you can notice the contrast between the section with food and the one with clothes. In the alleys with food people call after and encourage you to buy their products, but in the garments section, it's much calmer and quieter. Sellers are very hospitable and they can answer every question about their products, but if you are still not sure whether you want to buy the goods they offer, the marketers can give you a sample to taste and help you decide. Most stands are family-owned businesses that are run by generations. Thanks to our charisma and outgoing way of being sellers we got to try new tastes and we were able to buy local products. The open market starts at 7:00 and it ends at 14:00 every Thursday. It was a great experience and something worth seeing and no matter where you are from, here you can feel at home. 

Municipal Garden
In the center of the new town in Rethymno, you can find a beautiful Municipal Garden. It's a perfect place to visit to calm down and rest.

 It's also a great opportunity to cool down on hot days because it's full of high trees.

In the middle of the park, there is a lovely café where you can eat something, drink coffee in the morning or wine in the evening or anything you like during the day. Because the café is placed in the middle of the park it has a beautiful view of a charming old fountain and all paths in the park. Next to the café, there's a scene where small concerts or events happen and provide entertainment for locals and tourists.

The Park is full of different kinds of flowers, trees, and plants such as bauhinia variegata or more known as an orchid tree. It's native to the area of Asia but you can see it in this garden.

The next one that caught our attention was Nerium oleander which is a typical plant for the Mediterranean region. It has beautiful, little, pink flowers.

Another tree that seemed interesting to us was kurrajong that is an Australian plant that has bell-shaped flowers and produces useful tough fiber.

While walking down the park from time to time you can see monuments of men described in greek.

You can find a lot of educational things in the park such as tables with pictures and texts about plants, leaves, flowers, and seeds.

The whole place is magical and you could walk there for hours and never get bored.

If you're interested in flora it's a perfect place for you to see and explore.

If you want to escape from reality to wether think, read a book, listen to music or maybe just spend time with yourself. On the other hand it's also a perfect place for a date or meeting with friends.

The park was extraordinarily nice and for sure we will be back to this amazing place.

Wycieczka z przewodnikiem    Dzięki programowi ERASMUS+ nawiązaliśmy współpracę z Gminą Rethymno na Krecie w Grecji. Kreta położona jest na południu Grecji, jest największą wyspą kraju i otoczona jest Morzem Śródziemnym. Rethymno jest godzinę drogi od lotniska w Heraklionie i 45 minut od lotniska w Chanii - dwóch największych miastach na wyspie, Rethymno jest na trzecim miejscu.

Zwiedzając Rethymno warto odwiedzić stary Port Wenecki i latarnię morską, ponieważ są one jednym z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych elementów miasta. Widok zapiera dech w piersiach, a zdjęcia z tego miejsca są niesamowite. Miasto jest pełne pięknych miejsc, ale ten obszar jest jednym z najczęściej odwiedzanych, co nie jest dziwne, ponieważ jeśli chcesz w pełni doświadczyć, musisz to zobaczyć samemu. W starym weneckim porcie cumują tylko małe łodzie, od czasu do czasu można też zobaczyć piracki statek wycieczkowy. Jednym z elementów portu jest egipska latarnia morska, która została zbudowana podczas krótkotrwałej okupacji przez nich Krety. Latarnia ma 9 metrów długości, a jej konstrukcja ma elementy orientalne i trochę przypomina minaret. Światło z latarni sięga nawet 49 metrów, niestety nie spełnia obecnie swojej funkcji, mimo że jest chętnie odwiedzanym miejscem przez turystów i fotografów z całego świata. Jeśli chcesz spróbować tradycyjnych słodyczy, możesz odwiedzić piekarnie na starym mieście. Większość z nich to firmy rodzinne, a jedzenie, które wytwarzają, jest pyszne. Zaułki na starym mieście są magiczne i można poczuć się jak w filmie, są idealne na wieczorne spacery. Spacerując po starym mieście jest mnóstwo sklepów z pamiątkami, kawiarni i restauracji z tradycyjnym jedzeniem, których trzeba chociaż raz spróbować. Obok placu Titou Petychaki znajduje się fontanna Rimondi. Który był głównym źródłem wody w mieście. Fontanna wraz z loggią i wieżą zegarową wyznaczają granice placu weneckiego. Do dziś woda wypływa ze słynnych trzech głów lwów.

Doświadczenie, które tu uzyskujemy, będzie zdecydowanie niezapomniane, a nasza historia właśnie się tutaj zaczyna, a my mamy zamiar jeszcze bardziej poznać to piękne miasto i jego infrastrukturę.

Zwiedzanie twierdzy

Churches

Religia jest ważną częścią życia wielu ludzi. Dlatego odwiedziliśmy kościoły wokół Rethymno, aby poznać jego wartości religijne.

Odwiedziliśmy pięć głównych kościołów, pierwszym z nich była Katedra Najświętszej Marii Panny.

Pierwotna budowla była trójnawową bazyliką ze środkową nawą poświęconą Ofiarowaniu Marii Panny, a dwie pozostałe – Trzem Hierarchom i Świętym Apostołom. Kościół ten powstał w 1844 r. i został ukończony w 1856 r.

Następny kościół był znacznie mniejszy i dość trudny do znalezienia, ale oznacza to, że jest przeznaczony dla mieszkańców i osób silnie związanych ze swoją wiarą.

Kolejnym kościołem, który odwiedziliśmy, był neoklasycystyczny kościół Agios Antonios na starym mieście Rethymnon, należący do doktryny katolickiej. Został zbudowany w 1890 roku, jak głosi inskrypcja przy wejściu, i został zbudowany na potrzeby katolickich chrześcijan w mieście. Katedra pod wezwaniem św. Franciszka służyła jako przytułek, niestety była zamknięta, ale i tak wywarła na nas wrażenie.

Naszym kolejnym przystankiem był kościół Matki Bożej Anielskiej, który został wybudowany w ostatnim roku panowania Wenecji i poświęcony był Marii Magdalenie.

Ostatni ale nie mniej ważny był kościół, który wywarł na nas największe wrażenie - Kaplica św. Spiridona, która znajduje się obok największej atrakcji miasta - Fortecy. Aby dostać się do kościoła, trzeba wejść po schodach, ale droga jest tego warta. Jest to mała kaplica prawosławna wbudowana w skałę.

Odwiedziliśmy także meczet Neratzes. Znany jest również jako Meczet Gazi Hussein, znajduje się w pobliżu placu Petichaki. Początkowo był to wenecki kościół pod wezwaniem Świętej Marii, później stał się klasztorem augustianów. Kiedy jednak Turcy zdominowali miasto w 1657 r., ich przywódca, Gazi Hussein Pasza, zamienił je w meczet.

Ludzie w mieście mają różne religie i można znaleźć placówki wielu wyznań, takich jak prawosławny, muzułmański, chrześcijański i wiele innych, ważne jest, aby każdy mieszkaniec miasta miał możliwość i miejsce do modlitwy.

Zwiedzanie Muzeum Sztuki Współczesnej Krety 

Ostanio mieliśmy okazję odwiedzić Muzeum Sztuki nowoczesnej w ktorej mieszczą się dzieła 33 artystów z Grecjii ale też z całego świata, bazujących na idei oraz przekonaniach Marii Marangou. Dzieła wyrażają teraźniejszość naszej przeszłości,  większość z nich tworzona jest z gliny, ziemii, materiały, marmuru, Krosna itd.

 Wizyta w warsztacie instrumentów muzycznych
 Muzeum Tradycyjnych Instrumentów Muzycznych - Dziś mieliśmy okazję odwiedzić pracownię tradycyjnych instrumentów muzycznych firmy Stagakis.  Biznes, który tworzy od trzech pokoleń, działa od 1945r.  Przy wejściu znajduje się muzeum, w którym prezentowana jest wystawa poświęcona produkcji.  Na wystawie są kreteńskie liry i inne instrumenty.  W kolejnej sali zobaczyliśmy pracę twórców przy produkcji instrumentów muzycznych.  Zapoznali nas z etapami produkcji i narzędziami do tego wykorzystywanymi.  Klienci mają możliwość gry na instrumentach.  W kolejnej części budynku znajdowała się wystawa instrumentów z każdej części Grecji, m.in. mandolina i ręcznie robione buzuki.  Na zakończenie trasy mieliśmy okazję posłuchać profesjonalnych muzyków, którzy pięknie dla nas grali.

Zwiedzanie rynku rolników w Rethymno

Targ w Rethymno znajduje się obok Ogrodu Miejskiego i jest odpowiednim miejscem do poznania codziennego życia mieszkańców.

 Marketerzy oferują produkty regionalne, które sami wytwarzają, takie jak oliwki, miód, zioła, sery itp.

 Można tam również znaleźć sporo ubrań. To trochę chaotyczne miejsce, ale idąc alejkami można zauważyć kontrast między sekcją z jedzeniem a tą z ubraniami. W alejkach z jedzeniem, ludzie krzyczą zachęcając do zakupu swoich produktów, ale w dziale z odzieżą jest znacznie spokojniej i ciszej. Sprzedawcy są bardzo gościnni i potrafią odpowiedzieć na każde pytanie dotyczące ich produktów, ale jeśli nadal nie jesteś pewien, czy chcesz kupić oferowane przez nich towary, sprzedawcy mogą zaoferować próbkę do spróbowania i pomóc w podjęciu decyzji. Większość stoisk to firmy rodzinne, prowadzone od pokoleń. Dzięki charyzmie i towarzyskim byciu sprzedawców mogliśmy próbować nowych smaków i kupować lokalne produkty. Targ zaczyna się o 7:00 i kończy o 14:00 w każdy czwartek. To było wspaniałe doświadczenie i coś wartego zobaczenia i bez względu na to skąd jesteś, tutaj możesz poczuć się jak w domu

Municipal Garden

W centrum nowego miasta w Rethymno znajduje się piękny Ogród Miejski. To idealne miejsce na wyciszenie i odpoczynek.

Jest to również świetna okazja do ochłodzenia się w upalne dni, ponieważ jest pełna wysokich drzew.

W środku parku znajduje się urocza kawiarnia, w której można coś zjeść, rano wypić kawę, wieczorem wino lub cokolwiek w ciągu dnia. Ponieważ kawiarnia znajduje się w środku parku, ma piękny widok na uroczą starą fontannę i wszystkie ścieżki w parku. Obok kawiarni znajduje się scena, na której odbywają się małe koncerty lub imprezy zapewniające rozrywkę mieszkańcom i turystom.

Park pełen jest różnego rodzaju kwiatów, drzew i roślin takich jak bauhinia variegata czy bardziej znana jako storczyk. Pochodzi z obszaru Azji, ale można go zobaczyć w tym ogrodzie.

Kolejnym, który przykuł naszą uwagę, był oleander nerowy, który jest typową rośliną dla regionu śródziemnomorskiego. Ma piękne, małe, różowe kwiaty.

Innym drzewem, które wydało nam się interesujące, był kurrajong, australijska roślina, która posiada kwiaty w kształcie dzwonu i produkuje użyteczne twarde włókno.

Spacerując po parku od czasu do czasu można zobaczyć pomniki mężczyzn opisane w języku greckim.

W parku można znaleźć wiele rzeczy edukacyjnych, takich jak tablice ze zdjęciami i tekstami o roślinach, liściach, kwiatach i nasionach.

Całe miejsce jest magiczne i można tam spacerować godzinami i nigdy się nie nudzić.

Jeśli interesujesz się florą, jest to idealne miejsce do zwiedzania i odkrywania.

Jeśli chcesz uciec od rzeczywistości aby pomyśleć, poczytać książkę, posłuchać muzyki lub po prostu spędzić czas z samym sobą. Z drugiej strony jest to również idealne miejsce na randkę lub spotkanie z przyjaciółmi.

Park był niezwykle ładny i na pewno wrócimy do tego niesamowitego miejsca.
