Rethymno celebrates European Mobility Week 2023

 The municipality of Rethymno  is working on making sustainable transportation a normal way of getting around for locals and visitors,   for the environment, and for the health of everyone.

For nine years in a row, Rethymno Municipality has been part of the "EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK," which happens every year from September 16th to 22nd  as Greece is one of the countries where this week takes place. The government supports it, giving local authorities like Rethymno a chance to make plans and take action to find better, eco-friendly ways to move in their cities.

Rethymno has received awards for taking part in the European Mobility Week and for Sustainable Transportations. In 2019, it was second in Europe, and in 2021, it was first for road safety also being recognized nationally. This year, more than 2,600 cities in 41 countries are taking  part in the European Mobility Week, and the theme is "Save energy."

During European Mobility Week, the Rethymno Department of Urban Planning organizes events to aware everyone of better ways to move around the city and have cleaner air, giving smart ideas to use cars less and reduce pollution. It also looks at new technologies based on e-cars, ebikes and designs new walking and biking routes.

It wants people of all ages in the city to get involved, so through activities and events showing them a new way of living through hands-on experiences.

Rethymno municipality is working closely with schools to teach kids about road safety and let them experience it themselves.

They'll use special games that cobines their fun with a traffic education.

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, there will be an opening event at the Unknown Soldier Square. They will talk about natural routes in Rethymno, launch a book, and show a film.

On Sunday, September 17, 2023, there will be the 4th City Night Race starting and ending at the Unknown Soldier Square.

On Monday, September 18, 2023, there will be a children's movie screening from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 pm at St. George Square.

On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, they will be more activities planned.

On Friday, September 22, 2023, which is recognized worldwide as World Car Free Day, Rethymno Municipality will close off a section of the coastal road  Eleftherios Venizelos, from the Unknown Soldier to the Lyceum of Hellenes,  so that the whole area will be opened to people walking and cycling.

On the same day, there are planned activities  about traffic safety.

The Rethymno Municipality and the Department of Planning, Sustainable Development & European Programmes invite people of all ages to join these activities, looking forward to encourage a healthier lifestyle that is better for both people and the environment they live in.
