Rethymno Urban Accessibility Plan

Urban Accessibility Plan

Accessibility Meets Charm!

Yesterday, the Municipality of Rethymno presented its Urban Accessibility Plan (UAP) and asked for public feedback.

The meeting at the Municipal Hall was attended by many people representing different interest groups all of them working, both in the city and in the 19 settlements, together to make Rethymno a welcoming place for all residents and visitors all year round.

A specialized team surveyed and presented a 54-kilometer network and proposed improvements such as widening sidewalks, creating new routes, setting up guides for the visually impaired, installing ramps for the disabled, marking new crosswalks and upgrading public spaces and buildings. The community and those affected now have the opportunity to contribute their suggestions.

The plan, financed by the Green Fund and developed by Lever-Development Consultants S.A, shows which paths need to be made accessible in the coming years. Mayor George Marinakis expressed his satisfaction and emphasized how important it is for everyone to be able to move freely and unhindered. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to address these issues promptly, which is not only a cultural responsibility but also a fundamental legal obligation.

In the old city of Rethymno main attractions are within walking distance of each other, with major landmarks only a short, less than 15-minute walk apart. This makes the charm and accessibility of Rethymno even more enticing.
