The tribute volume "Eleutherna"  edited by the excavator and author, Professor Nikolaos Stambolidis, gives us valuable knowledge about the ancient city of Eleutherna. The volume is to travel to important competent bodies both in Greece and the rest of the world and is also available in digital format.

At this point, it is worth mentioning all the contributors to the project “Eleutherna ”. First of all, the professor of the Department of History and Archaeology of our University, Mr. Nikolaos Stambolidis, worked with passion and continues the excavation work in the archaeological site, as previously mentioned. Along with him, we cannot omit the valuable contribution of his colleagues, Professor Thanasis Kalpaxis and Petros Themelis. Also, it is of great importance to refer to the active participation of the local residents who realized early enough the value of the project and helped in every way to excavate and protect the archaeological site.

The Museum, as well as the archaeological site of the Necropolis, constitute a source of knowledge about our existence and our origin. Through the exhibits and their symbolisms, we can learn who we are and which values shaped our journey through time on this Homeric island.

However, a significant contribution, which is considered a breakthrough in human evolution, requires resources both material and psychic in order to be achieved. For this reason, we are grateful for the generous donation of Nikos Daskalantonakis and his family, throughout the demanding journey of the “Eleutherna ” vision.

This tribute volume, dedicated to the archaeological site of ancient Eleutherna along with the museum and its exhibits, invites its readers to discover all the scientific knowledge that emerged from the excavation work.

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
