A City in Bloom

As the days grow longer and the weather becomes milder, Rethymno bursts into color. Almond, orange, and wildflowers bloom along the cobblestone streets and countryside paths.

The Venetian old town, surrounded by history and charm, takes on new life in the spring sunshine, while local cafés and tavernas fill with people enjoying the outdoors.

The scent of blooming jasmine and orange blossoms mixes with the aromas of fresh herbs and traditional Cretan cooking.

It’s a season that calls for exploration through archeological sites and monuments, coastal villages, and scenic cycling and hiking trails.

Easter in Rethymno - A Sacred Tradition

Greek Orthodox Easter is the most important religious holiday in Greece, and in Rethymno, it is observed with great care and heartfelt devotion.

During Holy Week, each day brings unique customs and services, from Palm Sunday processions to Good Friday’s moving Epitaphios ceremony.

Locals and visitors gather in the city’s historic churches and beautiful monasteries to participate in centuries-old rituals.

Highlights include

During Holly Week

  • Palm Sunday: Worshippers receive crosses woven from palm leaves. At the Monastery of Saint Irene, nuns create detailed palm wreaths that decorate the church.
  • Holy Thursday: Families dye red eggs and bake traditional Easter breads and cookies.
  • Good Friday: Churches are filled with flowers. A slow, candlelit procession takes place in the evening, with multiple Epitaphs converging at the Church of the Four Martyrs, accompanied by choirs and the city’s Philharmonic Orchestra. In Argyroupoli village, giant torches made of reeds light the procession route—a powerful local tradition.
  • Holy Saturday: At midnight, the “Holy Light” is shared, fireworks light up the sky, and the Resurrection is joyfully celebrated.
  • Easter Sunday: Families gather outdoors to roast lamb, enjoy festive dishes, sing, dance, and share stories—celebrating life and togetherness.
