It is the central entrance to the wall of the Venetian fortifications in the city of Rethymno. The gate was built in the years of Rettore Jocopo Guoro (1566-1568). In the pediment, there was a relief of the lion of St. Mark, between two towers. Today, this relief is preserved in two pieces in the courtyard of the Loggia.

This is the church of the monastery of the Order of Franciscan Friars. The doorway of the entrance to the church is impressive in its decoration. In the years of the Turkish occupation it was converted into an Imaret, i.e. a workhouse. Until 1996 the church was used as a venue for cultural events. It was recently restored and now houses the city's Archaeological Museum.

You enter to the square from a Venetian doorway. The Turks narrowed it by building a smaller interior decorated with an impressive vine, lion reliefs, and the symbols of the Ottoman Empire. The 7.5 acre square in the heart of the Old Town of Rethymno is surrounded by remarkable monuments and buildings with cultural uses, such as the "Turkish" school, the House of Culture, the Neratze Mosque, the Historical and Folklore Museum. It is named after the Asia Minor refugees thus a monument representing the Asia Minor Catastrophe has been placed in the square.

The "Turkish" school was built in 1796 as a school for girls at that time. It is an imposing neoclassical building whose use to this day remains the same.

This building was a catholic monastery and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Augustinians "Santa Maria". It was converted into a mosque in 1657. In 1890 a large minaret with two balconies was added, designed by the engineer Georgios Daskalakis and is the tallest in Rethymno. The doorway of the building, which is on Vernardou Str, is one of the most impressive of Rethymno. Today, the Neratze Mosque hosts the city's Conservatory.

The fountain was built in 1626 by the city's rector A. Rimondi. This project covered part of the city's water supply needs at that time. It is located in present-day Platanos Square and in the allotment of the Venetian town center. It consists of three troughs into which water flows from three lion-head-shaped faucets. The dome, part of which is still preserved today, is a later addition during the Turkish occupation.

The Loggia was built in the 16th century to designs by the famous Venetian architect Michel Sanmicheli. It was a magnificent building in the center of the city and was a gathering place for the nobility to discuss political and economic matters. Immediately after the Turkish conquest, it was converted into a mosque with a minaret, which was demolished in 1930. Today it houses a museum shop selling faithful copies of the Archaeological Resources Fund.

The 1618 wall embraces the old Venetian Harbor to the east and is preserved with some more recent interventions. The Lighthouse was constructed during the Ottoman period. The building to the southeast of the port was constructed in 1931 and was used as a customs house which today hosts the Info Center of the city. The vaulted spaces in the two or three-storey buildings of the harbor have been converted into small and picturesque fish taverns, where one can enjoy the secrets of Cretan cuisine.
