Mili Gorge

The entrance to the gorge lies to the south of the village of Chromonastiri and the exit is near the village Xiro Chorio. This gorge, with abundant greenery, takes its name from the little abandoned village with many mills, which is located there. Despite its small dimensions, the gorge is home to a number of rare species of Cretan flora, that make it a unique botanic garden.

The inhabitants of the old village of Mili were mostly millers and almost all the cereals of the area and the surrounding villages were once ground in this village. Today one watermill has been completely restored. The village of Mili also served as an important shelter and cover for the fighters against the Ottomans, and during World War II against the Nazis.

The running waters create small waterfalls and ponds that are ideal for refreshing stops under the shade of wild sycamores.

Estimated duration: 1.5 hours                             Difficulty level: 1                                    Distance: 2.5Km

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
