Every year on March 25th Rethymno celebrates Greek Independence Day in rememberance of Greek War of independence in 1821.
It is also one of the biggest religious holidays for the Greek Orthodox Church.

The parade takes place around 11:00 marching infront of town hall where schools, Armed Forces and cultural associations participate.
After the parade local and visitors consume salted cod, the special dish since March 25th its in the Greek Othodox lenten period, just before Greek Easter.

The day is a public holiday and all shops, archaeological sites, as well as museums, are closed.

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
