Marine Environment, Coastal Threats and Fisheries
A meeting is held by ΑΚΟΜΜ-PSILORITIS today, Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in Rethymno City Hall. It brings together local authorities and groups interested in the "Marine Environment, Coastal Threats and Fisheries" plan. This plan is part of the operational program "FISHERIES AND THE SEA" 2014-2020 Its main goal is to manage risks to the marine environment, especially those related to fresh fish.
During the meeting, participants considered various topics such as the climate change impacts on local fishing, marine litter, plastic pollution, and shorelines climate changes, socio-economic pressures, and threats.
One key action of the plan is the creation of an "Observatory," an informal network involving research bodies, local and regional authorities, and other stakeholders. The observatory aims to initiate an open dialogue among local authorities, fishing associations, and other stakeholders to address issues like marine pollution, climate change, and environmental threats.
The observatory serves a dual purpose: first, to identify and prioritize risks and threats to the marine environment and fisheries, and second, to develop targeted proposals to tackle these issues. The plan involves continuously updating the observatory with valid data, scientific publications, news, and events. This ensures that it remains a useful tool for informing and mobilizing state bodies, institutions, and society. The plan also underscores the importance of fostering open dialogue between local authorities and organizations like the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.
