MedPhoto 5: CLIMATE WARS
The Contemporary Art Museum of Crete and KOLEKTIV8 are hosting an exhibition called Critical Archives VI: We Can't Breathe. It's part of the 5th Mediterranean Photography Festival (MedPhoto), which focuses on Climate Wars.
The MedPhoto Festival addresses important issues of our time and talks about the climate crisis. It looks at how we use natural resources dangerously and harm ecosystems. The exhibition also discusses concepts like ecocide and climate justice. It sheds light on things like the financial side of energy and the challenges faced by countries in the Global South.
Critical Archives VI: We Can't Breathe showcases artworks, photos, documentaries, and books. These pieces explore the relationship between humans and natural ecosystems. They highlight alternative ways for humans and nature to coexist. Some tell stories of people resisting changes that affect the environment. The exhibition contributes to the idea of modern political ecology, which includes eco-feminism and degrowth approaches.
MedPhoto carefully selected works that challenge the idea of nature as separate from humans. This perspective often turns nature into an object, a view connected to historical colonial attitudes. The exhibition also features artistic practices that expose contradictions in representation and imagine a different future.
Artists taking part include Ursula Biemann, Evangelos Daskalakis, Sophie Gerrard, and others. Photobooks by Mathieu Asselin, Makeda Best, and more are also featured.
The artistic direction for the exhibition is led by Maria Maragou and Pavlos Fysakis. They guide the show, emphasizing critical perspectives and pushing for a more harmonious relationship between humans and the environment.
