First meeting of the Tourism Committee
The first meeting of the Rethymno Tourism Development Committee highlighted the important role it plays in the local economy. Mayor Mr. George H. Marinakis, who attended the meeting, emphasized the significance of the Committee, which aims to promote and support local tourism, showcasing the attractiveness and competitive advantages of the Rethymno destination.
The inaugural session took place at the tourism office on the coastal avenue on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Mayor Marinakis outlined the multifaceted work of the committee, which is tasked with proposing policies for the area's development and economy.
Mayor Marinakis welcomed the new members and introduced the new committee president, Mr. Konstantinos Gasparakis, emphasizing his eagerness to work and his sense of responsibility for the mission assigned to him.
Before starting the proceedings, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the late Georgios Smaragdakis, whose legacy houses the Tourism, Entrepreneurship, and Volunteering Department of the Municipality of Rethymno.
Addressing the new municipal staff, Mayor Marinakis highlighted the diverse composition of the committee, which includes representatives from various sectors of Rethymno. He stressed the importance of participatory principles in shaping proposals and exchanging ideas on critical issues facing the municipality, particularly regarding tourism.
Issues such as rational management of natural resources to protect the environment, infrastructure development, cleanliness, and support for the public healthcare system are crucial factors intertwined with tourism. Mayor Marinakis emphasized the need to ensure a safe living environment and provide high-quality services for both residents and visitors.
Mayor Marinakis expressed gratitude to the former Deputy Mayor of Tourism, Ms. Pepi Birliraki, for her dedicated work over 17 years, leaving behind a significant know how for the new administration to build upon.
Finally, Mayor Marinakis cut the Committee's New Year's cake, wishing everyone a successful and productive term, along with good health and family happiness.
The new committee comprises 29 members, including six Rethymno Municipal Councilors, representatives from the Tourism Department of the Regional Authority of Crete, the Department of Economics at the University of Crete, the Chania-Rethymno Bus Company, tourist organizations, professional associations, the Chamber of Commerce, the Commercial Association of Rethymno, and six citizens with knowledge and experience in tourism and entrepreneurship.
