Mikrasiaton Square

Address:

mikrasiatonMikrasiaton Square is located in the Old Town of Rethymno and it is the biggest square in the heart of the historical center since 2007.

Its name comes from the settlement of the inhabitants of Minor Asia (Mikrasiates=people from Minor Asia) who arrived in Rethymno after the population exchange set by the Lausanne Convention and were accommodated in that square.

Being the meeting point of the youngsters and the families of Rethymno, mostly during summer, due to its spaciousness and a playground for the young children’s amusement, the Mikrasiaton Square has also room for bikes, skates, and trampoline.

The monuments that frame the Mikrasiaton Square are jewels for the city of Rethymno since they are the most important buildings remaining from the Venetian and Ottoman period, such as the House of Culture, the Neratze Mosque, the church of Agios Fragkiskos and the Historical and Folklore Rethymno Museum.

There is a monument in the Mikrasiaton Square representing the Minor Asia disaster that was placed there after the efforts of the Association of Minor Asia and the Association of Minor Asia “Ionia” Rethymnon. The monument, five meters in length and four meters in height had been placed on the east side of the square. The Minor Asia Hellenism had imparted to the local population of Rethymno many types of handmade professional art and creation and actively and effectively contributed to revitalizing the local economy.

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
