The cello, like the rest of the string instruments, is monophonic and it can play only one melodic line, without being able to "accompany" it, on the contrary, e.g. with a piano or guitar. This creates some difficulties for the listener, as it often cannot perceive the harmonious background hidden under a melody.

Efforts have often been made to reduce or eliminate this "problem", starting with the "master" J.S. Bach, with his exceptional and very distinctive Sarabands, sets the stage for a more polyphonic approach to the instrument.
