Captain Michalis (Elefteria or Death)
Modern People's Opera House in Two Actions
The Municipal Regional Theater of Crete, the Region of Crete and the Municipalities of  Rethymno present the modern popular opera Captain Michalis (Eleftheria or Death) by Dimitris Maramis, based on the emblematic work of Nikos Kazantzakis.
The project is assigned by the Region of Crete and presented by the Municipality of Crete in co-production with Artway-Technotropon while under the auspices of the ′′ Greece 2021 ′′ Commission.
This is Crete's top representation in celebration of 200 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821, as the island is inextricably linked to the fights for freedom and revolutions against Turkish yoke. An event added to the actions of the Region of Crete to celebrate the 200 years since the Greek Revolution.

This new work by Dimitris Maramis, written in the form of the musical theatre, is based on the author's original text. The libretto is signed by the composer, the lyrics of the choral belong to the poet Sotiris Trivizas, while the directing has been taken over by Efi Theodorou, Artistic Director of Municipality of Crete.
Participates the Youth Orchestra of Crete Municipality of Heraklion SONKDI, under the direction of the distinguished conductor Miltos Loyadis.
The production is framed by renowned performers of the lyrical theater and art song and for its implementation, important artistic contributors.
In this original ecumenical work, the composer, demonstrating deep knowledge and proportional respect for the Cretan secretariat, history and tradition, with which he has been swallowed for years, highlights the aspects of Kazantzakis's epic novel: the eternal passion of the Cretans for freedom, suffering of forbidden love, the struggle of the soul of man for righteous, for honor, for ancestors, for sin, for revolution, for life and death.

Monumental works of Cretan literature complement the list of Crete's timeless cultural heritage and patronize our island on the world map of letters and arts.
The Region of Crete, continuing the actions in the context of the celebrations to complement the 200 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Crete and the Municipalities in Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos and Artway-Technotropon , presents the modern popular opera Captain Michalis by Dimitris Marami.

A work by the great Cretan thinker Nikos Kazantzakis, which reflects the unflattering mind of the Cretans, their passion for a life unleashed, their timeless perception of life as stated in two words ′′ Elefteria or Death ".
As a Region of Crete, we congratulate all contributors and wish that Captain Michalis will continue to teach the Cretans wherever he is.
