Earth's Tomorrow - Rethymno's Call for Climate Action

Armeni New Olive Press Museum

Rethymno is set to host a groundbreaking Ecological Symposium titled "EARTH: A Sustainable Planet for All - A Call to Action - Change is Possible"

September 10-12, 2024

This crucial event continues the legacy of environmental stewardship champions by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeo, often is called the "Green Patriarch" for his longtime advocacy for environmental issues.

The symposium, held under the auspices of H.E. the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and H.E. the Ecumenical Patriarch, builds upon the Ecumenical Patriarchate's commitment to environmental protection.

Since the early 1990s, Patriarch Bartholomeos has organized international ecological summits and seminars, bringing together scientists, policymakers, and religious leaders to address environmental challenges.

In the spirit of these efforts, our symposium will gather notable personalities from across Greece to discuss climate change, sustainability, and resilience. Speakers include church representatives, university professors, political and judicial authorities, and NGO leaders.

They will share findings and propose actions to awaken civil society to the climate crisis, echoing the Ecumenical Patriarch's call for ecological responsibility as a moral and spiritual duty.

The event will take place at significant locations including the Holy Metropolis premises, Arkadi Monastery, the University of Crete, and the Palaeontological Museum of Rethymno.

This choice of venues reflects the Ecumenical Patriarch's approach of connecting faith, science, and culture in addressing environmental issues.

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
